Games Are Still Good, You Just Play Bad Ones: Great Weird Games To Try

I will suggest some games that don't suck, but first I must explain why most modern games do.

Most modern games suck for a number of reasons:

  • They're multiplayer and competitive, tailored to high level gameplay
  • They're usually following trends
  • They're part of some culture war
  • They bit rot (I can't return 4 months after not playing and play the same game)

All these issues add to the horribly unfun feeling that modern games give. There's no wow factor, no new mechanics, no familiarity (everything's a live service now) and they all are culture war brainrotted in some way.

An easy comparison is old call of duty and new call of duty, I'll compare Modern Warfare 3 (the new one) to Black Ops 2 for each point:

  • MW3 had constant new guns throughout its life cycle, balance changes etc., Black Ops 2 only got dlc updates for guns and infrequent changes
  • MW3 added a battle royale, following trends, and that battle royale dragged other gamemodes too, moving zombies to be a battle royale and killing the mode for the long time fans, Black Ops 2 had a very distinct zombies, with innovative and brave changes (tranzit bus, die rise verticality, mob celebrity cast and theming, origins 4 wonder weapons etc.)
  • MW3 has automatic voice chat moderation (part of the culture war) and no team vs team chat, since they don't want peoples feelings hurt, killing the games community style (trash talking, boyishness etc.), Black Ops 2 lacked any of the censorship
  • MW3 hasn't yet bit rot rot but it has had the opposite instead (unlike many games where the game changes, though it does here, or live service ends), remaining the same price and being added to an ever growing launcher for the past years of games in one monstrous program that has shared dependencies and little compression, leading to huge game sizes (up of 150gb for a single MW3 install!), Black Ops 2 was bought on disc, can be found online for cheap, and has gone down in price (if only minorly due to corporate greed)

Simply put big corporations are no longer following a structure that allows them to create the great games we once enjoyed, so we must look to certain companies, particularly indies and those built on their weird games, for some actually decent games. I will list below my recommendations of such games.

Gori: Cuddly Carnage

Gori: Cuddly Carnage is a recently released hack-and-slash game that is very nostalgic feeling. It has the weirdness and art style of a classic xbox 360 game, specifically it feels like a combination of Lollipop Chainsaw and Naughty Bear, two classic 'weird' and fun games from the Xbox 360 era of gaming.

You play as a cat in a post-apocalyptic earth who rides a sentient hoverboard, hacking your way through cute characters such as unicorns and lovehearts, that have been infected with some form of virus that turns them feral. They have wiped out all of humanity already, including your creator. There are tons of skins, upgrades and levels, and free dlc for new outfits too. It's a great game made by an absolutely tiny studio and 100% deserves all of your support!

The game has a free demo and is available on Steam, GOG and PS4, with Switch maybe coming later, and the demo is at least worth a try for 30 minutes of nostalgic fun no matter what. It's best played with a controller I think, though I ran into some bugs with unbound buttons I had to bind to the sticks.

If you want more funky games check out their publisher Wired Productions, who seem to specialise in picking up indies creating highly advanced and slightly weird actions games!

I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES 1N IT!!!1

I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES 1N IT!!!1 is a top down twin-stick shooter, free on steam and originally and Xbox Live Arcade title that went for a single dollar. It is effectively a playable music video, with each section of the song changing the map and adding new enemies. It's a very fun game, and can be completed in 15 minutes or so. I would highly recommend it if you want a fun and unique game to play in one sitting. It reminds me of Vampire Survivors mixed with the Boxhead flash games.

Space Funeral

Space Funeral is an RPG Maker game that has a crazy art style but a somewhat understandable plot. It's a fun and unique adventure, though some of the RPG Makerisms are a bit tired nowadays. You play as Phillip, a man who is trying to save his world from collapsing, and pick up some companions on your way to the City Of Forms to save the world. It's a bit dated and not great mechanically but a fun zany adventure if you want a fun and quirky rpg to play.

Grasshopper Manufacture Games

Grasshopper Manufacture are a japanese company best known for their No More Heroes series, but they are also responsible for fun games such as Lollipop Chainsaw (a favourite classic feeling game of mine where you play as a zombie slaying cheerleader with her boyfriends sentient decapitated head as her companion) and killer7, which is held to high acclaim as a cult classic by some. Their games tend to be slightly weird and very interesting, as well as being mainstream enough to have a strong fanbase and follow some conventions. Most of their games are worth a try.

Juice Galaxy

Juice Galaxy is a weird game, it's best to just go in blind and play it. It's a physics based RPG combat game, that's all you need. It has character customisation and even custom character textures. I'd suggest you play through it, it's a good adventure I wont spoil much of as working it out is part of the fun.

Conclusion

This list is nonexhaustive, and is mostly focused on weird games (which appeal as modern games lack any real innovation) but there are many less weird games that are great too. I just wanted to shore some great games I like for people to try.
